Kutch, Gujarat, Preferred Vacation Destination for NRI.

Great Rann of Kutch. rann utsav.

The Great Rann of Kutch, is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India and the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is about 7,505.22 square kilometres (2,897.78 sq mi) in size and is reputed to be the largest salt desert in the world. This area has been inhabited by the Kutchi people.

Kutch, India’s Wild West, is a geographic phenomenon, full of rustic beauty. What appears an endless desert plain running dead straight for the horizon, is in fact virtually `a seasonal island` resembling a Katchua or Kachbo meaning tortoise, surrounded by seawater. It is a land of colour, culture and chronicle is one of districts of Gujarat where all the country`s smiles and metaphor appear to have come in concert.

Things to Know how Rann word comes :

The name “Rann” comes from the Hindi word ran (रण) meaning “desert”. The Hindi word is derived from Sanskrit/Vedic word iriṇa (इरिण) attested in the Rigveda and Mahābhārata.

The Great Rann of Kutch, along with the Little Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands on its southern edge, is situated in the district of Kutch and comprises some 30,000 square kilometres (10,000 sq mi) between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. The marsh can be accessed from the village of Kharaghoda in the Surendranagar District.

The magic of Kutch, Gujarat

This festival of Kutch celebrates the colour of the region, providing an arena for the arts and crafts of Gujarat to be displayed and purchased.  I spent hours just walking through the stalls looking at the detailed embroidery on bed linen and brightly coloured leather work that had been intricately carved into decorations.

For the more inquisitive souls, you can also visit some of the local villages and NGOs to see local artisans practice traditional Indian arts including rabari emroidery, rogan art and the distinctive mirror work that Kutch is known for. My favourite would have to be seeing how the colourful kitchen items are made using the lac-turned wood method in the tiny village of Nirona.  With a steady hand, a plain piece of wood is quickly transformed into a vibrant work of art before our eyes.

During the festival Kutch is at its colourful and exotic best. Kutch, one of the most ecologically and ethnically diverse district of the state is a celebratory land of art, crafts, music, dance, people and nature. This annually organized festival offers tourists to attend folk dances and music concerts. This festival provides an exclusive opportunity to witness the creative ingenuity of the artisans and craftspeople.

Nearly 32 cultural troupes from various districts of Gujarat participates in the Dance and Musical Carnival. Enjoy these cultural programmes performed in the midst of the White Salt Desert spread over miles. The various locales within Kutch takes one around the natural grandiose while introducing the visitor to the indigenous cultural and ethnical flavor of the people.
