Lothal and Dholavira
They are the famous ruins dating to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and important places of visit. Lothal is located in the modern day Bhal region and was excavated during 1955 to 1960. It was a vital trade center with the dock connecting this city with the Harappan settlements in the Sindh region. You can access this place from the Lothal-Bhurkhi railway station, around 6 km from this site. Adjacent to the ruins is a museum that houses collections from the Harappan era.
Dholavira
Dholavira is another Indus Valley site located in the Kutch district. It ranks as the fifth largest Harappan site excavated in India. According to archaeologists, this city measures around 100 hectares and is larger than Lothal. The water channels here reflect the sophistication of the early inhabitants. The stone built reservoirs were places to store fresh water for survival during the drought seasons.
Beaches in Gujarat
Tourists also visit Gujarat for a beach holiday. Beaches here are not only beautiful but have several other attractions situated close to them. Somnath Beach is an ideal escape for a tranquil vacation. Beyt Dwarka Beach is also an isolated island. The Balachari Beach in Jamnagar is around 25 km from the main city. Ahmedabad’s Mandvi Beach is one of the finest in the country where the surrounding fishing hamlets impress tourists. It is also popular for water sports such as skiing, surfing and speedboats.
Somnath Temple
It is one of the 12 jyotirlinga sites and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is known for being destroyed at least six times and was last built in 1947. This ancient temple in Gujarat resembles the Chalukya style of architecture also popular as Kailash Mahameru Prasad Style. It is around 79 km from Junagadh and accessible from Veraval. Veraval beach is around 5 km from here.
Dwarka
This city in Gujarat is of importance to Hindu pilgrims. According to legends, this was the dwelling place of Lord Krishna and thus considered a holy place. You can visit the 16th century built Dwarakadhish Temple, the Rukmini Devi Temple and Bet Dwarka Temple, accessible by boat.
